Pakistani-Canadian Ex-Army Officer on Digital Resistance to Military Rule in Pakistan

Haider Mehdi, a Pakistani-Canadian political commentator, civic activist, digital broadcaster, former entrepreneur, and former Pakistan Army officer describes a moral and political journey from believing the Pakistan Army was a necessary bulwark to arguing it is responsible for Pakistan’s devastation by placing itself above the constitution, elected governments, and the rule of law. With deep family ties to the military, he says military interference has shaped Pakistan since the first martial law in 1958, and that power has rotated between the army and civilian political families including the Bhuttos/Zardaris and the Sharifs, producing a captured system where elections, courts, media, and governance are manipulated through fear and coercion.

Mehdi explains that since launching his YouTube-based activism in May 2022, digital platforms have helped break censorship and challenge the army’s narrative, reaching ordinary Pakistanis, policymakers, and the diaspora in Urdu and English. He describes heavy retaliation: platform pressure and shadowbans, disinformation, personal smears, legal intimidation and long prison sentences in absentia, travel restrictions, threats to family members, intimidation of guests and supporters, and three serious attempts to silence him including an alleged plot involving criminal gangs.

He argues his work is pro-constitution and pro-civilian supremacy, calling for free and fair elections, independent courts, and a free media, while urging the diaspora to pressure Western officials not to legitimize what he calls illegally installed Pakistani authorities. He says lasting change must come from within Pakistan through public resistance, warning Pakistan’s future is bleak unless military authoritarianism is ended and the institution is reformed and put under civilian control.
